Garden Valley, Idaho – After more than two years of development, 3DTOPO Inc., launched their new app titled Oilist on the App Store. Oilist has been designed to automatically generate unique and original works of art based on photos supplied by a user. iTunes has selected Oilist in “Apps we love” featured in the US, China and many other countries. 3DTOPO Inc. are the developers of ComicBook!, an app that was awarded best iPad Photography App of the Year from Apple iTunes.
The Oilist app is not a photo filter. Unlike most filters, Oilist will never generate the same results twice, and is capable of automatically creating anywhere from impressionistic to abstract artwork based on the user’s photos. Instead of applying a fixed formula to an image as photo filters typically do, Oilist 1.0 analyzes the user’s image using computer vision technology, then paints simulated paint particles that are applied with various brush strokes and techniques.
Once a user has provided an image and selected one of the 18 available base styles, Oilist will go to work, automatically painting a new image for the user. The user may just watch the painting process, or interact with it through various options that allow each style to be infinitely customized. For instance, the user may change the feel of the painting by choosing from different moods, by selecting various brush stroke styles and controlling brush options. In addition, the user may control the simulated gravity of the virtual paint by tilting their device, and can control the brush stroke angles by yawing (rotating) the device.
Oilist’s creator likens it to a video game for generating art, as Jeshua Lacock put it: “Oilist is a ground-breaking app that allows the user to interact with it, as if Oilist is a fast-paced video game. Instead of scoring points; beautiful and original works of art are the reward. I think it is as exciting to watch the new painting unfold in front of you as it is to share the work that it creates.”
It also appears that Oilist is unique from traditional photo filters in that it will paint layer upon layer indefinitely at around 40-50 frames per second, allowing the user to experiment and explore images in-depth. At anytime during the painting process, the user may capture 4k resolution images and as often as they please. Users may order archival quality canvas prints of their work directly in the app.
